The Government of Japan supports Empowerment of Livelihoods for a community group

January 27, 2010

The handover ceremony for "The Project for the Empowerment of Livelihoods by the Utilization of Organic Agriculture in Sri Sa Ket" was held on January 18, 2010. Mr. Kyoji KOMACHI, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Thailand, Mr.Vijak Shinkoatpong, Sheriff of Utumpornpisai District and other guests participated. They made congratulatory speeches at the ceremony.

Sri Sa Ket province is one of the poorest provinces in Thailand. Recently some problems such as unstable prices for agricultural products, deterioration of natural resources and drought have occurred. In addition, unemployment rises during the farmers’ off season due to the recession in the Thai economy. Many people go to urban areas to seek work in factories or the service industry. The result is loss of stability to family life in rural areas.

Against this background, via the Working group for the New Theory of Agriculture, the Government of Japan provided a grant to the project for the Empowerment of Livelihoods by the Utilization of Organic Agriculture in Sri Sa Ket. This involved training in skills building, promotion of self-sufficient agricultural systems, construction of small buildings and providing equipment to produce compost. The total grant assistance amounted to 1,783,000 baht.

Through this grant, people have been able to gain knowledge and develop a community network in order to support education and carry out activities which promote healthy living.

The Government of Japan is willing to consider providing further support to projects which contribute to social and economic development at the grassroots level through the GGP scheme.
