JAPAN / FAO Joint Tsunami Emergency Assistance

On 26th December, 2004, the massive earthquake and the tsunami triggered by it caused extensive damage to life and property in countries on the Indian Ocean, including Thailand.

The FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives(MOAC) of Thailand jointly conducted a detailed assessment of the damage to and needs of the fisheries and agriculture sectors immediately after the disaster occurred.

On the bases of this assessment, the Government of Japan, through the FAO, supplied fishery and agricultural materials that were urgently needed by the affected fishermen and farmers so that they could reconstruct their livelihoods.

Selection and monitoring of beneficiaries and delivery of materials, were carried out in conjunction with the local NGO(Andaman Forum) in the interests of transparency.

Fishing gear, organic fertilizer for soil, etc. were supplied to small-scale fishermen: numbering about 700 families, and have small-scale farmers: numbering about 520 families.

These supplies have conducted to the early and sustainable recovery of the livelihoods of the tsunami victims.
